American rapper Kanye West has offered to “meet and listen” to members of the UK’s Jewish community following backlash over his scheduled performance at London’s Wireless Festival.

West, also known as Ye, has faced sustained criticism over past antisemitic remarks, including comments expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler, as well as controversial content released in recent years.

His planned appearance at the festival has drawn condemnation from politicians and Jewish organisations, with some calling on the UK government to deny him entry. UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the rapper should not be headlining the event.

In a statement released on Tuesday, West addressed the controversy, saying he hopes to demonstrate change.

“My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music,” he said.

“I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the UK in person, to listen. I know words aren’t enough – I’ll have to show change through my actions.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also criticised the booking, describing it as “deeply concerning” given the rapper’s past remarks.

However, Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, defended the decision, stating that West had been booked strictly to perform music, not to promote personal views.

Benn acknowledged the backlash, describing West’s past comments as “abhorrent,” but urged the public to consider the value of forgiveness and second chances.

He also admitted organisers may have erred by not engaging with the Jewish community earlier in the process.

Meanwhile, major sponsors including Pepsi and Diageo have withdrawn their support following the announcement of West as a headliner.

Streeting further dismissed attempts to link the rapper’s actions to mental health, questioning whether such explanations justify the release of offensive content.
