Two-time Grammy Award-winning American jazz singer, songwriter and producer Cassandra Wilson has died at the age of 70.
Wilson died on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, according to her longtime manager, Robert Torre.
Torre said the legendary musician died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, close friends and her manager. The cause of death was not disclosed, while her family and close friends have requested privacy.
Wilson was widely recognised for her distinctive contralto voice and genre-defying approach to music, blending traditional jazz with elements of blues, folk, pop, R&B and country.
Her unique style earned her widespread acclaim and helped establish her as one of the most influential jazz vocalists of her generation. Time magazine named her “America’s Best Singer” in 2001.
Wilson received four Grammy nominations during her career and won twice for Best Jazz Vocal Album. She won for New Moon Daughter in 1997 and Loverly in 2009.
Born and raised in Jackson, Wilson began studying music as a child, learning piano at the age of six before also taking up the clarinet. She later attended Millsaps College and Jackson State University.
She moved to New York in the 1980s and became part of saxophonist Steve Coleman’s influential M-Base Collective. Her debut album, Point of View, was released in 1986.
Wilson gained wider recognition after signing with Blue Note Records, particularly following the release of her acclaimed 1993 album Blue Light ’Til Dawn, which showcased her distinctive blend of jazz, blues and other musical traditions.
She also collaborated with several prominent musicians during her career and was a major contributor to Wynton Marsalis’ Blood on the Fields, which became the first jazz work to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1997.
In 2022, Wilson was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, one of the highest honours in American jazz.
Her final album, Coming Forth by Day, was released in 2015 as a tribute to jazz legend Billie Holiday.
Tributes have since poured in for Wilson, with musician Jon Batiste describing her as an artist whose music carried the sound and spirit of the American South.
Jackson Mayor John Horhn also paid tribute to the late singer, describing her as an “extraordinary native daughter” and a singular musical voice whose work connected generations.
Wilson leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the most distinctive and influential voices in modern jazz.
