Nigeria Drifting Towards One-Party System – Makinde Lament Dying Democracy

Governor Seyi Makinde has raised concerns over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the country may be gradually sliding towards a one-party system.

In a newsletter titled “The Business of Governance,” the Oyo State governor said recent political developments are creating uncertainty about the future of democratic balance in the country.

According to him, opposition voices are increasingly under pressure, while alternative political platforms are being weakened.

“Voices that speak up are being openly threatened. Opposition is being fragmented, constrained, or pushed to the margins,” he said.

Makinde noted that the trend is discouraging public participation, as many Nigerians feel their voices no longer carry weight in national discourse.

He stressed that a functional democracy relies on strong opposition, credible alternatives, and public trust in institutions.

“When opposition becomes ineffective, accountability weakens,” he added.

The governor also cautioned against public apathy, warning that silence or withdrawal at this stage could lead to consequences that may be difficult to reverse.

“I do not believe Nigeria has reached a point of no return. But silence or withdrawal could take us in a direction we may struggle to reverse,” he said.

Makinde called on political leaders and citizens alike to remain actively engaged in safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic space, adding that he plans to consult widely with stakeholders in the coming days on ways to strengthen the system.
