Nigerian music star Davido has stepped into a political role in Osun State, joining the Imole campaign as Chairman of the Youth Campaign Council Committee ahead of the 2026 elections.
The announcement was made as the internationally acclaimed artist returned home to support the campaign, with organisers describing his appointment as a strategic move to mobilise young voters. Davido, known for his influence among Nigeria’s youth, is expected to bring energy, visibility, and grassroots engagement to the campaign.
In a statement welcoming him, the campaign noted that his involvement would help strengthen youth participation, while reaffirming its commitment to policies and initiatives aimed at youth development across various sectors in the state. The leadership also assured residents of continued dedication to their welfare and the advancement of the Imole continuity agenda.
Despite his new political involvement, Davido has clarified that his music career will remain active. Speaking during a livestream, the singer said taking on a government role would not stop him from performing, though it may reduce the frequency of his appearances.
“I would still be performing if I ever chose to work for the government. That doesn’t stop anything,” he said, citing Michel Martelly as an example of a leader who continued his music career while in office.
However, the artist also expressed reservations about fully venturing into politics, noting that his earlier interest had waned after observing the experiences of other celebrities who made similar transitions.
According to him, while he once considered a political path, the realities of the system have made him more cautious, adding that many entertainers who entered politics in Nigeria have struggled to achieve lasting success.
His latest move, therefore, signals a cautious but notable step into political participation, even as he maintains his identity as one of Africa’s leading music acts.
