Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 34, bringing an end to his eight-year career with the national team.
Mendy announced the decision on Sunday, September 13, through his social media accounts, posting a video highlighting some of his memorable moments with the Lions of Teranga and accompanying it with the message, “Thank you, Senegal.”
The Al-Ahli goalkeeper made his international debut in 2018 and went on to earn 59 caps for Senegal, keeping 31 clean sheets and conceding 34 goals, according to data from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Mendy was a key member of the Senegal side that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, securing the country’s first continental title. He also represented Senegal at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups.
His international career also included individual recognition. He was named the best goalkeeper at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and won the Yashin Trophy at the 2021 Ballon d’Or awards after an outstanding season with Chelsea.
Mendy leaves the national team while still featuring among the nominees for the 2026 Yashin Trophy, which recognises the world’s best goalkeeper.
His retirement marks the end of an important chapter for one of Senegal’s most accomplished goalkeepers.
