The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will confer degrees on 12,895 graduates during its 55th Convocation Ceremony, with 168 students earning First Class Honours.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press briefing at the university’s Enugu Campus ahead of the convocation, themed “The Renaissance of Mind and the Rebuilding of the Lion’s Den.”
According to him, 10,641 students will receive first degrees and diplomas, including the 168 First Class graduates, while 2,944 postgraduate students will be awarded higher degrees. The postgraduate awards comprise 1,390 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 1,340 Master’s degrees, and 214 Postgraduate Diplomas.
Ortuanya also highlighted recent academic milestones achieved by the institution, including an increase in its MBBS admission quota from 180 to 400 students following accreditation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. He added that the admission quota for Dentistry had also risen from 15 to 60 students.
The Vice-Chancellor further announced that the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the unbundling of the Department of Mass Communication into five specialised degree programmes. In addition, four new academic programmes—Agribusiness, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Industrial Arts, and Criminology and Security Studies—have received full accreditation.
He also revealed that the university has established a Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Laboratory to equip students with skills for the digital economy.
Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, Ortuanya said UNN remains focused on rebuilding the university in line with the vision of its founding fathers while positioning it as a globally competitive institution capable of producing graduates prepared to tackle contemporary national and global challenges.
