UK Refuses to Invite Putin to 2027 G20 Summit, Diverges from Trump’s Position

The United Kingdom has ruled out inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the 2027 G20 summit scheduled to hold in Manchester, marking a difference in approach from US President Donald Trump, who has invited the Russian leader to this year’s gathering in Miami.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham disclosed the position during an interview with The Economist, where he was asked whether Putin would be invited to the summit. He reportedly responded, “No.”

Burnham explained that Putin would not attend because of existing British sanctions against senior Russian officials, imposed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The decision contrasts with Washington’s position after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed in September that Putin had been invited to the December 2026 G20 summit in Miami, offering him an opportunity to engage with Trump and other world leaders.

Russia remains a member of the G20 despite Western efforts to isolate Moscow over the war in Ukraine. Traditionally, host countries invite all members of the group to participate in its annual summit.

The 2027 G20 leaders’ summit is scheduled to take place in Manchester, England, in November.
