The development was announced by US health officials amid reports of rising infections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring areas. The measures are aimed at reducing the risk of cross-border transmission through international travel.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that passengers arriving from affected regions will undergo additional health screening procedures. It also noted that certain visa services connected to individuals from impacted areas have been temporarily suspended as part of precautionary steps.
In a related development, a US-based health worker operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo tested positive for Ebola after exposure in the field. The individual, who is reportedly symptomatic, is being transferred to Europe for treatment, while other potentially exposed persons are being moved for medical monitoring.
The World Health Organization has also raised concern over the outbreak, with reports indicating dozens of deaths and hundreds of suspected cases across affected regions. Most recorded infections are said to involve adults in their twenties and thirties.
Despite the escalation of response measures, US authorities maintain that the risk to the general public within the United States remains low.
Response teams are being deployed to support surveillance, contact tracing, and testing efforts in affected countries, while the US government has also pledged funding to assist regional containment efforts.
