Uganda has reversed its decision to withdraw from Prince Harry’s Invictus Games after receiving clarification that King Charles III supports the country’s participation in the event.
Uganda’s military chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, had announced the country’s withdrawal last week, citing concerns over its relationship with the British monarch amid the ongoing tensions surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Kainerugaba had said Uganda did not want its participation in the Games to be interpreted as opposition to King Charles.
However, the decision was reversed after Kainerugaba spoke with Sir Clive Alderton, King Charles’ principal private secretary, who reportedly clarified that the monarch had no objection to Uganda taking part in the Games.
Following the conversation, Uganda confirmed that it would resume preparations for the 2027 Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The Invictus Games Foundation welcomed Uganda’s return, describing the country as the 26th nation to join the international sporting event for wounded and injured military personnel.
Uganda had only recently joined the Invictus Games community before announcing its withdrawal, making the reversal a significant development for the upcoming competition.
