Two Brothers Arrested for Allegedly Beating Stepbrother to Death Over Missing Bag in Cross River

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly beating their 46-year-old stepbrother, Bassey Eno Ibiang, to death over an allegation that he stole a bag belonging to their elder sister.

The suspects, identified as Omini Eno Ibiang, 28, and Emmanuel Eno Ibiang, 26, were arrested following a report of the incident in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

According to the police, the complainants alleged that the suspects attacked the deceased over the missing bag. He was reportedly tied by his hands and legs before being severely assaulted with a sharp object, sustaining a deep machete wound to the head.

The victim was subsequently rushed to Ugep General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were deposited in the hospital mortuary.

Confirming the arrests, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpa Akata, said the suspects had been taken into custody as investigations continued to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the individual roles of those involved.

The Commissioner of Police, Geoffrey Ajo, condemned resorting to violence over allegations of theft or other disputes, urging residents to report suspected offences to the police rather than take the law into their own hands.

The command assured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated and handled in accordance with due process. It also stressed that the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
