Commuters travelling along the Iyana-Ipaja/Iyana-Iba axis of Lagos State have been left stranded after commercial bus drivers withdrew their services over alleged extortion by law enforcement and transport regulatory agencies.
The drivers reportedly stopped operations on Monday, September 14, 2026, accusing officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), popularly known as agbero, of making persistent demands for money.
Some of the affected drivers described the alleged extortion as increasingly unbearable and said it was affecting their ability to operate profitably.
The drivers also alleged that LASTMA officials frequently impound their vehicles over various traffic offences and sometimes keep them for an entire day, resulting in significant financial losses.
The withdrawal of services left many commuters stranded, with passengers forced to seek alternative means of transportation to their destinations.
The drivers said they embarked on the strike to draw attention to their grievances and compel the relevant authorities to address the alleged extortion and harassment.
