FIFA has sanctioned the Nigeria Football Federation and the DR Congo Football Federation following disciplinary breaches during their 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-off final.
DR Congo defeated Nigeria 4–3 on penalties in Morocco to advance to the intercontinental play-offs.
FIFA’s disciplinary report revealed that Nigeria was penalised for breaches related to order and security, including spectators throwing objects during the match, in violation of Articles 17 and 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The NFF was fined 1,000 Swiss francs.
The DR Congo federation received a heavier sanction after supporters were found using laser pointers and similar electronic devices, violating Article 17.2.d of the code, resulting in a 5,000 Swiss franc fine.
In the aftermath, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle controversially accused DR Congo officials of using voodoo.
The sanctions come as Nigeria awaits FIFA’s decision on a formal protest lodged by the NFF over the alleged use of ineligible DR Congo players during the play-off. Submitted on December 15, 2025, the complaint listed numerous foreign-born players, including Lionel Mpasi, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Arthur Masuaku, Samuel Moutoussamy, and Cédric Bakambu, among others, claiming they received clearance to play only days before the decisive match.
The NFF is seeking an investigation that could potentially disqualify DR Congo from the 2026 World Cup qualification process.
