The Edo State government has ordered the arrest and prosecution of students from Igbinedion Education Centre after a video showing them bullying and assaulting a fellow student went viral.
Kassim Afegbua confirmed the government’s action during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, March 16, noting that the video raised serious concerns about student discipline in schools.
“It is quite disturbing. When we heard the news and saw the clips, we were wondering what could have warranted such behaviour. There will be no justification for that kind of treatment. It is very unacceptable,” Afegbua said.
The state moved swiftly by expelling the students involved and directing the police to ensure they are arrested and prosecuted. “We took action almost immediately, which led to their expulsion. But it is not just about expulsion; we also directed the police to make sure the students are properly arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law. I spoke with the Commissioner of Police this morning, and he said he is expecting the parents to bring the students involved. After investigations, they will be charged in court,” he added.
The viral video shows two male students beating and kicking another student lying on the ground. One of the attackers was captured dragging the victim by his suit and stomping on his chest while the boy cried in pain, even as a third student, recording the incident, pleaded for them to stop.
The Edo State government’s decisive response underscores its commitment to ensuring safety and discipline in schools.
