X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced the shutdown of its existing creator revenue-sharing programme, with final payments to eligible creators expected in September.
The social media platform, owned by Elon Musk, closed new applications for the programme on August 7. The final payment cycle will cover eligible earnings through September 7.
The revenue-sharing programme allowed eligible creators to earn from engagement generated by their posts. Participation was restricted to users subscribed to a paid X Premium plan who met the platform’s eligibility requirements.
According to X, the decision to end the programme was influenced by concerns that its incentives encouraged some users to repost or repurpose existing material instead of creating original content.
Allegra Jacchia, X’s head of creators, said the platform would replace the scheme with a new Original Content Rewardsprogramme designed to reward creators for producing original work.
Under the new system, eligible creators will earn based on qualified impressions generated by their original posts, with payments made every two weeks.
Content that may qualify includes original threads, videos, memes, reporting, analysis, commentary, reactions, photographs, graphics, illustrations and other creative work. Content that significantly transforms existing material through original analysis, narration, humour or creative editing may also qualify.
To participate, creators must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Live in an eligible country.
- Have a Personal or Business X account.
- Subscribe to an eligible X Premium plan.
- Have at least 500 verified followers.
- Generate at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within 90 days.
For now, only creators already enrolled in the existing revenue-sharing programme can join the new rewards system.
Applications for the Original Content Rewards programme can be submitted through Creator Studio. Creators whose applications are rejected will have one opportunity to appeal and may reapply after 90 days if they continue to meet the requirements.
X said existing creators will receive their final payment under the old programme for earnings through September 7. The first payout under the new programme is scheduled for August 28, while creators who enrol from September 8 are expected to receive their first payment on September 25.
