A yet-to-be-identified driver has tragically lost his life after a 40-foot container-laden truck fell onto a commercial Nissan Micra taxi at the Soka area along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Sunday, October 5, 2025.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred around 2 p.m. during a downpour. The truck, reportedly loaded with bales of clothing, crushed the Micra with registration number BDJ 981 ZY, leaving the driver trapped inside.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police, and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) were at the scene to recover the wreckage and retrieve the deceased’s body.
According to reports, rescuers had to use a machete to cut through parts of the vehicle to reach the victim.
An eyewitness identified as Yusuf blamed the crash on concrete barricades allegedly left on the road by contractors after completing repair works in the area.
“The accident happened around 2 p.m. when it was still raining. The trailer was coming from Lagos towards Ibadan. The driver tried to dodge those big concrete barriers placed on the road during construction, but in the process, he hit the Micra. He tried to regain balance, but the truck fell, trapping the driver,” Yusuf said.
An FRSC officer at the scene confirmed the account, stating that the truck swerved to avoid the barrier, hit the Micra, and tipped over, crushing the car.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of OYTMA, Adeoye Adekola, said the victim’s body had been taken to Adeoyo Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, while the truck has been moved to Sanyo Police Station.
“We have removed the corpse and deposited it at the hospital. The container, which was fully loaded with clothes, is still at the scene, but we have detached it from the truck. The major causes were impatience, speeding, and the lack of reflectors on the road barriers,” Adekola stated.
He added that normal traffic flow had since been restored after the wreckage was cleared.
