Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of veteran defender and Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Liverpool.
The 32-year-old left-back is set to officially join Spurs on July 1, bringing an end to an illustrious eight-year spell at Liverpool, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s finest defenders.
Robertson’s arrival comes as Tottenham begin preparations for the new season under manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is looking to strengthen his squad after the club narrowly avoided relegation last term, finishing just two points above the drop zone.
In a video message shared by Tottenham on social media, Robertson expressed his excitement about the move.
“Hi Tottenham fans, it’s me, Andy Robertson. As you can see, I’m not in Glasgow, I’m in America preparing for the World Cup,” he said.
“I just wanted to send you a message to say I cannot wait to play for you guys, I cannot wait to meet you guys, and I cannot wait to play in the stadium for the first time in front of you.
“I’m already looking forward to next season. All the best and I’ll see you soon.”
De Zerbi welcomed the signing, describing Robertson as a player whose experience and leadership will be invaluable to the team.
“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” the Tottenham manager said.
“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.
“I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for a reported £8 million and went on to enjoy a trophy-laden career at Liverpool FC. During his time at Anfield, he won two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, and several other major honours.
The Scottish international made 378 appearances for Liverpool but saw his playing time reduced last season, making only 11 Premier League starts.
Tottenham supporters will now be hoping the experienced defender can help stabilize the squad as the club seeks a more successful campaign in the season ahead.
