90-Year-Old Japanese Bodybuilder Wins Championship One Day After His Birthday

A 90-year-old Japanese bodybuilder has made history after winning the 85-and-over category at the All Japan Masters Fitness Championships in Hiroshima, just one day after celebrating his 90th birthday.

Toshisuke Kanazawa, who has spent almost seven decades involved in bodybuilding, achieved his long-held goal of competing at the age of 90 by claiming victory at the prestigious competition on Sunday, August 30.

The event, held in Kanazawa’s hometown of Hiroshima, attracted about 200 athletes between the ages of 41 and 90, competing across 13 different age categories.

Kanazawa faced six competitors in the 85-and-over division. After the preliminary round, he impressed the audience with a one-minute individual posing routine that helped him secure the championship.

The victory was reportedly his 17th Masters championship title, adding another remarkable achievement to a career that has spanned decades.

Kanazawa began his sporting journey as a competitive swimmer before turning to bodybuilding at the age of 20. He went on to win the prestigious Mister Japan title twice, at 24 and 27, before retiring from competitive bodybuilding at 34.

However, his retirement did not last forever.

After spending 16 years away from the sport, Kanazawa returned to serious training at the age of 50. He said his decision was partly motivated by a desire to encourage and inspire his wife, who was frequently ill.

His commitment to maintaining his physique has also involved a strict diet. He stopped eating meat and fish decades ago and instead relies heavily on foods including brown rice, fermented soybeans, eggs and miso soup.

Reflecting on his latest achievement, Kanazawa acknowledged that ageing inevitably brings physical changes but said overcoming those challenges through continued effort has become his way of life.

He has indicated that he has no plans to stop training and is continuing to pursue further records and competitions.

In a message celebrating his latest victory, Kanazawa thanked his supporters and revealed that he is scheduled to compete at the Japan Championships on October 6.

His remarkable comeback and continued dedication have made him an inspiration to athletes and fitness enthusiasts, demonstrating that age does not necessarily have to bring an end to an individual’s pursuit of excellence.
