Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history as the first African female artist to record seven entries on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The milestone was achieved after her song “What You Need” debuted at number 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, bringing her total appearances on the prestigious chart to seven.
With the feat, Tems now ties fellow Nigerian star Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether as the African artists with the most Billboard Hot 100 entries, with seven each.
In 2022, Tems became the first African artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart through her collaboration with Future and Drake on the hit song “Wait For U.”
The singer may soon surpass the record, as J. Cole’s “Bunce Road Blues” featuring Tems and Future is projected to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next week, potentially giving her a new lead among African acts on the chart.
