Ambassador Reno Omokri has called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to require Nigerian newscasters and on-air personalities to wear made-in-Nigeria clothing and speak with Nigerian accents while on air.
Omokri made the call in response to what he described as the increasing use of foreign clothing and both genuine and artificial foreign accents by Nigerian broadcasters.
According to him, the trend is becoming alarming and requires the intervention of the broadcasting regulator.
He urged the NBC to take steps to “correct” what he considers an unhealthy promotion of foreign cultural influences within Nigeria’s broadcasting industry.
Omokri’s comments have sparked discussions about cultural identity, professionalism and the role of the media in promoting Nigerian culture and locally produced goods.
The call was shared on social media, where the ambassador urged the broadcasting commission to encourage a stronger sense of Nigerian identity among on-air personalities.
