Bandits have reportedly killed the District Head of Gallah, Alhaji Ahmed Yusuf, a prominent traditional ruler under the Borgu Emirate in Niger State.
Yusuf, also known as the Magaji Garin Gallah of Agwara Local Government Area, was allegedly targeted after warning bandits to stay away from his community.
According to reports, the attackers stormed the monarch’s palace over the weekend and killed him in what is suspected to be a retaliatory attack following his opposition to their activities in the area.
The incident was first reported by security analyst Bakatsine in a post on X.
The slain traditional ruler was also identified as a brother of the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.
Details surrounding the attack, including the exact time it occurred and whether other people were killed or injured, were not immediately available.
The Chairman of Borgu Local Government Council’s office confirmed the death of the district head, describing the incident as “particularly painful and deeply disturbing.”
The Borgu Emirate also confirmed the death of Ahmed Yusuf and another prominent son of the emirate, Alhaji Garba Alhassan, known as the Tafidan Borgu.
In a statement issued on Sunday, August 23, 2026, by Ibrahim Toriq Abubakar, the emirate expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and described their deaths as a significant loss to the traditional institution and the people of Borgu.
“The Borgu Emirate mourns the painful loss of two great sons and princes of the Emirate: Alhaji Garba Alhassan (Tafidan Borgu) and Alhaji Ahmed Yusuf (Magajin Garin Gallah),” the statement said.
The emirate prayed for the souls of the deceased and called for peace, unity and protection for the people of Borgu.
The killing has heightened concerns over the activities of bandits in parts of Niger State and the growing danger faced by traditional rulers and community leaders who speak out against criminal groups.
