The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants for its 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier scheduled to hold on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The postponement was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, who attributed the decision to “unforeseen circumstances.”
Fintiri assured party members and aspirants that a new date for the screening would be communicated soon, while expressing regret over any inconvenience caused by the change.
“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and members of our party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” the statement read.
He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, credible, and seamless convention process.
The PDP’s 2025 Elective National Convention is scheduled to take place on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The party had on October 25 announced a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee chaired by former Ondo State governorship candidate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Eyitayo Jegede, to vet aspirants for various national positions.
The postponement comes shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his intention to contest for the position of national chairman.
This development follows reports that some northern PDP leaders had endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as their consensus candidate for the chairmanship seat — an endorsement that has been met with opposition from factions loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who cited inadequate consultation.
The growing disagreement reflects rising tension within the party, which has recently witnessed a series of internal disputes and notable resignations among its members.
