The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce regulations for TikTok and similar social media platforms in Nigeria.
This was disclosed by the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullah, who said the move is aimed at ensuring that TikTok is used for more than just entertainment.
According to Abdullah, the proposed regulation seeks to channel the creativity of Nigerian youths toward more productive and innovative digital ventures, rather than allowing the platform to remain dominated by “purely entertainment-driven content.”
The announcement has, however, stirred widespread reactions among Nigerians, with many questioning the government’s focus on social media regulation amid pressing economic and unemployment challenges.
