Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “alive, strong, and resilient,” dismissing media claims of the party’s decline and reaffirming its role as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.

Jonathan made the remarks on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at his private office in Abuja.

The meeting focused on reconciliation within the party and strategic preparations for the 2027 general elections. Highlighting the PDP’s historical resilience, Jonathan described it as more than a political platform, calling it a national institution.

“The PDP has been a critical contributor to our democracy since 1999. I have benefited from this party, serving as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and President. I am grateful and remain committed to contributing to its growth,” Jonathan said.

He urged the party leadership to prioritize national interest and institutional development over personal considerations, emphasizing that strong political parties are essential for democratic stability.

Earlier, Turaki thanked Jonathan for his guidance and loyalty, assuring him that the PDP is implementing a comprehensive “Rebirth Agenda” aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the party.

“Our goal is to return power to the people and reposition the PDP as the party of the majority of Nigerians. We are engaging aggrieved members because a united PDP remains the most viable platform for a balanced and prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki said.

Other members of the delegation included former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, and other members of the NWC.
