The Oyo State Government has warned residents against the spread of unverified security information, cautioning that misinformation could trigger panic, disrupt security operations and weaken public confidence at a critical time.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser on Security, Abayomi Fagbenro, who urged residents to confirm the authenticity of security-related information before sharing it with others.
Fagbenro also warned against the failure to report genuine security threats, stressing that withholding critical information could delay the response of security agencies and endanger lives.
He called on citizens to remain vigilant, pay close attention to activities within their environment and promptly report verified threats to the appropriate authorities, noting that security remains a collective responsibility.
The government’s warning followed the circulation of a false rumour on Tuesday alleging that bandits had attacked Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomoso and forced the institution to shut down.
Authorities described the claim as false, noting that it further heightened tension in the area following a deadly attack carried out by gunmen the previous Friday.
According to reports, armed attackers stormed three schools located on the outskirts of Ogbomoso, killing two teachers during the incident.
One of the victims was reportedly shot during the attack, while another teacher who was abducted was allegedly killed by the kidnappers.
Security sources said seven students, 18 children and six teachers are still being held captive, while security operatives continue efforts to secure their rescue.
