Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has formally called on the United Nations (UN) and other international human rights bodies to launch an independent investigation into the recent abduction and subsequent rescue of school pupils and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area.

The Governor made this demand during a statewide broadcast following the safe return of the victims, who spent 56 days in captivity before being rescued and reunited with their families.

Governor Makinde emphasized that the gravity and highly unusual circumstances of the mass abduction require a level of scrutiny that goes beyond Nigeria’s domestic security and political institutions.

He clarified that requesting international assistance is not an attempt to undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty, but rather a step to build public trust and ensure absolute transparency.

“The circumstances surrounding this abduction are sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny beyond our domestic institutions. I call on the appropriate international human rights and accountability mechanisms, including those within the United Nations system, to closely examine the facts.” Governor Seyi Makinde

Key Concerns Raised by the Oyo State Government

56 Days in Captivity: Pupils and teachers endured nearly two months of hostage conditions, raising questions about the speed and coordination of the initial response.
Call for Transparency: Governor Makinde insisted that Nigerians deserve a full, credible account of what transpired before, during, and after the rescue operation.
Accountability for Failures: The investigation aims to determine if there was institutional negligence, security lapses, or collusion at any level.

Under the Nigerian Constitution, primary responsibility for national security and the command of armed security agencies lies with the Federal Government.

Acknowledging this framework, Governor Makinde stressed that because state governors do not control federal security apparatuses, an independent review is vital to safeguard local communities in the future.

“The Nigerian people deserve a full, transparent, and credible account of what happened, who was responsible, whether there were institutional failures, and what measures must now be taken to ensure that no community is ever subjected to such a tragedy again,” Makinde stated.
