American rapper Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, popularly known as Nicki Minaj, has confirmed that her first name, Onika, is derived from the Igbo name Onyekachi.
Minaj made the revelation while reacting to a fan’s post celebrating her recent appearance at the United Nations, where she spoke against jihadist violence targeting Christians in Nigeria. The fan highlighted that her name, Onika—which means “Who is greater than God”—signifies her destiny for greatness and advocacy against injustice.
Sharing a photo explaining the meaning of her name and its variations on X, the fan wrote, “The name Onika means ‘continued belief in a supreme being who holds ultimate authority and surpasses all others in greatness.’ Let my Nigerian Barbz and friends confirm how God destines someone for great things before they are even born!”
Responding to the post, Minaj added another layer of intrigue: “Will it get even more mysterious if I told you the tattoo on my arm means ‘God is with me’ in Chinese?”
The revelation has delighted fans, connecting the global superstar to her Igbo heritage and reinforcing her message of faith and resilience.
