The Campaign Council of the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Naanlong Daniel, has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship and House of Assembly Election Committee to immediately declare the results of Piapung A and Piapung B wards as well as other collated results from the recently concluded rerun primary election for the Mikang State Constituency.
In a statement signed by the Director-General of the campaign council, Kevin Makum, the council maintained that the results from Piapung A and Piapung B wards were duly collated and should be recognized in line with established party procedures and democratic principles.
According to the council, Naanlong Daniel secured 621 votes in Piapung A Ward against 199 votes scored by his opponent, Timdi Nkat. In Piapung B Ward, the Speaker reportedly polled 1,104 votes, while Nkat scored 10 votes.
The council expressed concern over what it described as the non-declaration of the Piapung ward results despite the completion of the collation process, noting that results from other wards, including areas perceived to be strongholds of opposing interests, had been accepted.
It argued that under APC primary election guidelines, the responsibilities of a Returning Officer are limited to receiving ward results, verifying figures, collating constituency-wide results, and declaring the candidate with the highest valid votes where no formal objections have been upheld through due process.
The campaign council contended that the powers of a Returning Officer do not include the unilateral cancellation of validly collated results or ordering rerun elections outside the party’s established dispute resolution framework.
The council further questioned the basis for the non-declaration of the Piapung results and urged party officials to ensure that every stage of the electoral process operates within constitutional and procedural limits.
It also warned that continued uncertainty surrounding the ward results could undermine confidence in the party’s internal democratic process and lead to voter fatigue, particularly as voters in the affected wards had already participated in the exercise twice.
The council raised concerns over the handling of the primary election by the committee led by Fidelis Mnyim, alleging inconsistencies capable of creating avoidable tension within the party.
According to the statement, repeated attempts to reopen already concluded collation processes in selected wards could be perceived by party members as an effort to alter the outcome of the election and erode confidence in the credibility of the exercise.
The campaign organisation called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress and other relevant party organs to intervene and ensure that duly accredited and collated results are recognized in accordance with party guidelines.
The council maintained that the results recorded across the affected wards reflect the level of support enjoyed by Naanlong Daniel and urged the committee to declare the Piapung A and B results in the interest of party unity, transparency, and democratic credibility.
While reaffirming its confidence in the APC’s commitment to internal democracy, fairness, and due process, the council expressed optimism that the party leadership would protect the integrity of the primary election and ensure that all validly collated votes are duly recognized.
