The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered disciplinary action and criminal prosecution against officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

Speaking at a press conference at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP described the incident as “criminal, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable,” stressing that it contravenes the standards and values of the Nigeria Police Force.

He identified Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman as the principal officer in the incident, noting that his actions violated established procedures, including Force Order 247 governing the use of firearms.

“To be clear, this conduct was unlawful, unprofessional, and has no place in the Nigeria Police Force,” the IGP stated.

Egbetokun disclosed that all officers implicated in the incident were immediately transferred from the Delta State Command to Abuja, where they underwent internal disciplinary processes.

According to him, findings from the Orderly Room Tribunal and the Force Disciplinary Committee confirmed misconduct and breaches of operational procedures.

He added that both bodies recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers involved, alongside criminal prosecution for unlawful homicide.

“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate authorities to face criminal charges,” he said, noting that the recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.

The IGP emphasised that the actions of the officers were personal violations and do not reflect the institutional values of the police.

“We have zero tolerance for lawlessness within our ranks. No uniform is a licence to kill,” he said.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be pursued transparently.

“There is no way to compensate for the loss of a life, but I assure you that justice will not only be done, it will be seen to be done,” he added.

Egbetokun also reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to accountability and internal reforms, while urging residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
