The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who congratulated Nigerian workers for their contributions to national development.
In a statement issued on April 29, 2026, by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister commended workers across the country for their diligence, resilience, and commitment to progress.
Tunji-Ojo urged workers to continue upholding the values of patriotism, productivity, and dedication, noting that their efforts remain central to Nigeria’s growth and prosperity.
“The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers’ Day,” the statement read.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, enhancing job security, and creating an enabling environment for economic growth.
The minister further encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity and collective responsibility in nation-building, while urging citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the celebration.
