The Delta State Government has banned the observance of Valentine’s Day in all public and private secondary schools across the state, citing concerns over students’ academic focus and moral development.

The directive was contained in an official circular dated February 11, 2026, issued by the State Ministry of Secondary Education in Asaba and signed by the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Nze Ashibogwu. The notice, titled Abolition of Valentine Parties in Schools, was circulated to Chief Inspectors of Education, ministry field offices, and heads of both public and private secondary schools.

According to the ministry, the decision followed observations that Valentine parties were increasingly being organised in many schools, with participation from both students and teachers. The government noted that such activities do not contribute to academic improvement and could distract students from their studies.

The circular stressed that students should channel their time and energy into learning and other productive school activities, warning school authorities against programmes that may undermine academic performance or moral values.

Consequently, all school heads have been directed to stop organising or permitting Valentine-related celebrations within school premises anywhere in the state.
