Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos has weighed in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s pursuit of the historic 1,000-career-goals milestone, insisting the achievement would not eclipse the legacy of Brazilian great Pelé.
Speaking in an interview with OJogo, Carlos argued that Pelé’s long-celebrated feat should remain a singular chapter in football history, maintaining that the late Santos FC icon is still the only player officially credited with reaching the four-figure goal mark.
While praising Ronaldo’s longevity and consistency, Carlos said the Portuguese forward is likely to reach the landmark eventually but that doing so would not rewrite football’s historical narrative.
“For those who love Cristiano and soccer, it’s great to see him keep making history and breaking records,” he said. “The only player who ever scored 1000 goals was Pelé, but Cristiano might be able to join that group. I see him looking happy and confident in the Saudi league.”
Carlos also urged the five-time Ballon d’Or winner not to consider retirement anytime soon, saying the forward still inspires young players and remains a positive force in the game.
Ronaldo currently sits on 961 career goals and continues his chase of the milestone with Al Nassr FC, despite missing the club’s last three matches. Carlos expressed confidence that the Portugal captain will ultimately reach the historic mark.
