Counterfeit Goods Bill Not Dead – Senate

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,  has refuted insinuation in some quotas that the report of the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment on the Counterfeit Goods was nullified today at the floor of the Upper chamber.

The Bill according to the Senate is important  and it was thus earlier prioritized, considered today at the plenary.

The decision to refer the Bill back to Legal department came after a thorough debate which prompted the discovery of some irregularities in the Bill,  the Senate in a resolution however return the Bill to its legal department for proper drafting.

It is a standing tradition in the parliament to refer Bill to relevant department in view to put the record straight in order to avoid misinterpretation.

In a motion moved by the Deputy Leader of the Senate,  Senator Ibn Na’Allah,  he sorted the Senate to refer the Bill back to Legal department to properly vet and re-draft due to some errors and technicalities discovered during debate.

While asserting the motion seconded by Senator Suleiman Unman Hunkunyi, the President of the Senate, Dr.  Abubakar Bukola Saraki Senate resolved that the going forward Bills should be referred to the Legal department to pave way for thorough interpretation and presentation.

According to him: “ in view to avoid misinterpretation, the Senate resolved that this Bill be pass through the legal department for proper guidance before being presented on the floor of the Senate,  it

is hereby stood down and referred to the Directorate of legal department for proper drafting.
