Zimbabwean international footballer Divine Lunga has escaped unhurt after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Johannesburg, South African police have confirmed.

The incident occurred on Sunday in the Hillbrow area of Johannesburg, where the 31-year-old defender was reportedly travelling with his younger brother when an unidentified attacker opened fire on their car.

According to local reports, the brothers were on their way to church when the shooting occurred. The assailant allegedly mistook Lunga for an undercover police officer before firing multiple shots at the vehicle.

Confirming the incident, South African police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said authorities have launched an investigation into a case of attempted murder. She added that no arrests have been made and did not disclose further details about the attack.

Lunga, who plays for Zimbabwe’s national team and South African Premier Division side Mamelodi Sundowns, was not injured in the incident.

Neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor the Zimbabwe Football Association has issued an official statement on the shooting. However, the Warriors, Zimbabwe’s national football team, shared a photo of the defender in a prayer pose on social media with the caption, “In God we trust,” alongside his name.

Lunga has earned 21 caps for Zimbabwe and featured in the country’s squad during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The defender joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 and has since played a key role in the club’s success, helping them secure four domestic league titles and their second CAF Champions League crown in May.

The shooting comes amid ongoing concerns over violent crime in South Africa, which continues to record one of the world’s highest murder rates.
