The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt (University of Port Harcourt) has approved the appointment of Prof. Princewill Chike as the institution’s 10th Vice-Chancellor.
According to a statement issued on Friday by university spokesperson Dr. Sam Kpenu, the appointment was ratified by the institution’s 17th Governing Council following the conclusion of a formal selection process conducted in line with relevant statutory provisions, including the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act.
Prof. Chike is expected to assume office on July 13, the same day the tenure of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, will come to an end.
The selection process, the statement added, involved a Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which screened and evaluated candidates before arriving at the final decision.
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, congratulated the incoming Vice-Chancellor, expressing confidence in his ability to provide visionary leadership that will sustain the university’s academic and administrative growth.
Prof. Chike previously served as Rivers State Commissioner for Health under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike, bringing both academic and public service experience to his new role.
The appointment marks a leadership transition for UNIPORT as the institution prepares for a new phase of administration and development.
