Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have rescued a couple from a kidnapping attempt in the Byazhin area of Abuja following a gun duel that lasted over 30 minutes.
The incident reportedly occurred after officers from the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit acted on credible intelligence about suspected kidnappers operating around the Redeemed Church area near Paze Hills.
According to police sources, the operatives arrived at the location at about 12:34 a.m. on Friday and discovered armed men attempting to forcefully gain access into a residential property.
On sighting the police team, the suspects opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire that lasted for several minutes.
The police successfully overpowered the attackers and rescued the victims, identified as Mr. Samson and his wife, without sustaining any injuries.
The couple was later taken to the General Hospital in Gwarinpa for medical attention due to trauma-related distress and subsequently placed under protective care.
The suspects reportedly fled the scene with gunshot wounds, abandoning one AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and seven rounds of live ammunition.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, commended the operatives for their professionalism and bravery, while directing increased surveillance and patrols in the area to prevent further incidents.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements, sharing emergency contact numbers for public assistance.
The police command said the operation forms part of ongoing intensified efforts to combat kidnapping, banditry, and violent crime across the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.
