Nigeria’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has said President Bola Tinubu is committed to addressing long-standing grievances that fuel insecurity in Nigeria and across the wider region.

Ibrahim made the remarks after presenting his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday, April 20.

He said President Bola Tinubu believes Nigeria’s renewed diplomatic engagement at the UN will strengthen efforts to tackle security challenges both domestically and internationally.

According to him, the administration is focused on resolving religious tensions and other deep-rooted conflicts, which he described as essential to achieving lasting peace and stability.

Ibrahim added that Nigeria is seeking stronger international cooperation to address internal security concerns as well as wider threats linked to the Sahel and West African sub-region.

He noted that tackling internal grievances and regional instability remains key to achieving sustainable security outcomes.

The diplomat said Nigeria is returning to active multilateral engagement at a crucial time, following a period without a substantive permanent representative at the UN.

He also reiterated Nigeria’s support for UN reforms, including calls for stronger African representation on the Security Council through a permanent seat for the continent.

Ibrahim acknowledged that ongoing economic reforms in Nigeria may bring short-term challenges but expressed confidence in long-term benefits.

He further stressed Nigeria’s commitment to global cooperation on issues such as tax reform, climate action, and peacebuilding, while highlighting the importance of stability to global economic security.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, according to the statement, emphasised Nigeria’s importance in strengthening multilateral cooperation.

Ibrahim also met with Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, who welcomed his appointment and noted Nigeria’s active diplomatic presence had been missed.
