President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The address is one of several official events lined up by the Federal Government to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day, according to the Inter-Ministerial Committee inaugurated to coordinate nationwide activities.

Other programmes include a world press conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, and youth- and women-focused engagements slated for June 10.

A presidential broadcast is also scheduled for June 12, alongside a Democracy Day gala night.

During the committee’s inauguration, the Federal Government paid tribute to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other heroes of the June 12 struggle, noting their sacrifices in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said Democracy Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the efforts of Nigerians who fought for the entrenchment of democratic governance in the country.

He said the democratic institutions currently being strengthened are built on the sacrifices of patriots who pushed for civilian rule, adding that the June 12 anniversary remains a significant moment in Nigeria’s history.

Akume also said the celebration would provide an opportunity for the government to highlight its achievements in governance, institutional reforms, and national development despite prevailing economic challenges.

According to him, President Tinubu’s administration plans to use the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to democratic values and strengthen national institutions.

He described the planned celebration as “modest but purposeful,” in line with the government’s fiscal responsibility drive.

The SGF directed committee members to begin preparations immediately and submit their budgets for approval, noting that the committee has been divided into sub-committees to handle different aspects of the programme.

Nigeria marks Democracy Day every June 12 in honour of the 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by the late M.K.O. Abiola.
