Recent remarks by Bola Tinubu suggesting that Nigerians are faring better than citizens of some other African countries have drawn a sharp response from William Ruto, igniting widespread reactions online.
Tinubu made the comments during a visit to Bayelsa State, where he commissioned key infrastructure projects and defended his administration’s economic policies amid rising concerns over the cost of living and fuel prices.
Addressing residents, the Nigerian president stressed the need for honesty in governance, acknowledging economic hardships while urging citizens to remain appreciative.
“Being truthful with our people is important. Yes, I hear concerns from different economic angles. The cost of fuel is high, but let us look around and thank God for improved conditions. Consider what is happening in countries like Kenya and others,” he said.
In a response captured in a viral video, Ruto dismissed the comparison, pointing instead to Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges, particularly in the energy sector. He also made remarks about language proficiency that drew mixed reactions.
“We have a strong education system. We speak English well—arguably the best. If you hear someone from Nigeria speak, you might need a translator,” Ruto said, comments that sparked both amusement and criticism across social media platforms.
The exchange comes against the backdrop of broader economic pressures across Africa, including rising fuel costs linked to global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions around key oil routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
Online reactions have been swift and divided, with many users criticizing the tone of the exchange and urging leaders to focus more on addressing domestic economic challenges rather than making cross-country comparisons.
