The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has rejected statements attributed to Nyesom Wike on the 2027 governorship succession, insisting that only the electorate has the authority to determine the state’s next leader.
Speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, the party’s state chairman, Chukwudi Dimkpa, stressed that leadership in a democracy is decided through the ballot, not by individual influence or endorsement.
Dimkpa said the ADC is positioning itself as a credible alternative in the state’s political landscape, anchored on internal democracy, transparency, and inclusive participation. According to him, the party is building a broad-based movement that reflects the aspirations of the people.
He acknowledged the role of zoning in fostering balance and inclusivity, particularly between upland and riverine communities, but maintained that competence and fairness must remain central considerations.
The chairman added that the party would adopt a consultative approach in selecting its governorship candidate, with the aim of presenting a widely accepted and capable contender.
Dimkpa further noted that the ADC would take decisions at the appropriate time to strengthen democratic values and promote unity across the state.
He emphasized that governance, security, and economic development should remain key priorities as stakeholders make decisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
