Tinubu Embarks on Official Visits to Japan, Brazil

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, August 14, departed Abuja for a two-nation working trip to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, from August 20 to 22. The conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, will focus on economic transformation, private investment, innovation, and building a resilient and sustainable African society.

In addition to attending plenary sessions, President Tinubu will hold bilateral talks and engage with chief executives of Japanese companies investing in Nigeria.

TICAD, launched in 1993 by the Japanese government in collaboration with the UN, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, is held every three years in Japan or Africa. The last edition was hosted in Tunisia in 2022.

After TICAD9, the President will proceed to Brasilia, Brazil, from August 24 to 25 for a state visit at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. His engagements in Brazil will include bilateral meetings, a business forum with investors, and the signing of cooperation agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to strengthen ties between both nations.
