Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Garba Muhammad, has disclosed that terrorists have issued threats to bomb the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

Muhammad made the revelation during a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Legislative Security Directorate, a body proposed to strengthen security management and protect lawmakers, staff, and visitors within the parliamentary premises.

According to him, the National Assembly has continued to face a series of security challenges, including car and motorcycle theft, vandalism, fake identity cards, and infiltration by unregistered visitors.

He recalled that on May 4, 2021, a similar security alert warned lawmakers of a planned Boko Haram attack on the complex and other government locations in the Federal Capital Territory, prompting restrictions on access and heightened security measures.

Muhammad stressed the need for urgent fortification of the legislative complex to avert potential tragedy and ensure the continuity of governance.

“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” he said.

The lawmaker added that legislators remain vulnerable to physical threats from constituents and intruders who gain access to their offices without formal appointments.

“It is obvious that with the ongoing security challenges, if proper measures are not taken, it will truncate legislative activities in the National Assembly.

If activities are thwarted, there will be no representation, no oversight, no annual budget, no plenary — and that will destabilise legislative procedure, democracy, and the stability of our nation,” he warned.
