Raul Ramirez Osorio, a 19-year-old goalkeeper for Colindres Sports Club, has died after suffering a head injury during a Spanish fifth-tier league match.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, September 27, when Osorio collided with an opposing forward while attempting to catch a cross in the 60th minute of the game against Revilla. He suffered a blow to the head and went into cardiac arrest.
His manager, Rafa de Pena, rushed onto the pitch to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, aided by a nursing student in the stands, and managed to revive him before he was rushed to Marques de Valdecilla Hospital in Santander. However, he suffered a second cardiac arrest en route, and despite intensive care, he died on Monday, September 29.
The Royal Cantabrian Football Federation (RFCF) confirmed his death in a statement, noting that at his family’s request, his organs would be donated.
“Cantabrian football mourns the sudden loss of a young man who leaves us too soon, at just 19 years of age. The RFCF has decreed three days of mourning and will observe a minute’s silence in his memory at all matches during the next round of fixtures,” the statement read.
His club, Colindres, had earlier expressed solidarity while he was still in hospital, writing on social media: “We want to send a lot of strength to our goalkeeper Raul Ramirez and his whole family.”
Osorio’s death has sent shockwaves through the Spanish football community, with tributes pouring in for the young goalkeeper described as a promising talent whose life was cut tragically short.
