The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take urgent measures to address flooding affecting communities across the state.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, made the call on Tuesday while inspecting some of the flooded areas in Port Harcourt.
Heavy and persistent rainfall in parts of the state, including Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas, has caused widespread flooding, with several houses reportedly submerged.
The issue was raised during Monday’s plenary by the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Somiari-Stewart, who moved a motion on the flooding.
Following the motion, Amaewhule and some lawmakers visited affected communities to assess the situation.
The Speaker acknowledged that the state government might have taken some steps to address the flooding but said more needed to be done to ease the hardship faced by residents.
Amaewhule urged Governor Fubara to intervene immediately, stressing that the situation required urgent government action and support for affected residents.
He said the government had a responsibility to respond to the needs of citizens, adding that available resources should be deployed to provide relief to communities affected by the flooding.
