The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary, describing the country’s people, human resources and natural endowments as major sources of strength.
He said Nigeria’s diversity remains an important national asset and urged citizens to uphold peace, unity, patriotism and mutual respect.
The minister also called on Nigerians to emulate the love for country demonstrated by the nation’s founding fathers and work towards building a country that future generations would be proud of.
According to him, peace and stability are essential for national development, adding that the government remains committed to strengthening national security and public safety.
Tunji-Ojo said the Federal Government would continue working towards creating an environment where Nigerians can live, work and pursue their aspirations with confidence.
He expressed optimism about the country’s future, saying a better and more prosperous Nigeria was achievable through collective determination and commitment.
He urged Nigerians to use the Independence celebration as an opportunity to promote national unity, peaceful coexistence and patriotism.
