Real Madrid have parted ways with head coach Xabi Alonso following the club’s 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa final.
The LaLiga giants announced the decision in an official statement on Monday, less than 24 hours after the loss to their arch-rivals.
“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach,” the statement read.
The club praised the former midfielder, describing him as a Real Madrid legend and thanking him and his technical team for their service.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the statement added.
Alonso had come under increasing pressure in recent weeks following inconsistent performances in LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League. His comments after the Supercopa final, where he described the competition as “the least important” tournament Madrid would play this season, reportedly intensified scrutiny over his position.
The decision to dismiss Alonso comes just two days before Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey Round of 16 fixture against Albacete, leaving the club with limited time to appoint an interim or permanent replacement.
