A Nigerian medical doctor based in Germany, Baridueh Badon, has sparked conversations online after highlighting the benefits he enjoys from the German government despite paying a high tax rate.
Badon disclosed in a post shared on X that he pays about 42 per cent of his income as tax in Germany but receives extensive social benefits in return. According to him, one of such benefits includes unemployment support, where the government pays him up to 60 per cent of his salary if he loses his job, while also assisting him in securing new employment.
The doctor further revealed that the German government provides child benefits, noting that parents receive €250 monthly for each child until the child turns 18.
After listing the benefits, Badon questioned what Nigerians receive in return for paying taxes, especially in light of the recently introduced reformed tax laws by the Nigerian government.
His post has since generated reactions on social media, with many users comparing social welfare systems in developed countries to Nigeria’s tax structure and public service delivery.
