The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, has cautioned Nigerians against giving false information to the police or any public authority, stressing that such actions constitute a criminal offence under Nigerian law.

In a post shared on X, Babaseyi noted that anyone who knowingly provides misleading information to a public officer can face prosecution, including possible imprisonment, a fine, or both, under provisions of the Criminal Code Act.

He added that the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 also prescribes penalties for deliberately spreading false information electronically, including on social media platforms.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the command is currently handling a case involving a woman identified as Mirabel, who allegedly made a false rape claim against an unknown individual.

Babaseyi reiterated that false reports waste investigative resources and could obstruct justice, urging members of the public to provide accurate information when dealing with law enforcement authorities.
