Pope Leo XIV Arrives at Rome Hospital Ahead of Lung Surgery

Pope Leo XIV has arrived at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome ahead of a scheduled operation to remove a small nodule from his lung.

The 71-year-old pontiff was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, for the procedure, which was scheduled to take place later in the afternoon.

According to the Vatican, the operation will be carried out by a thoracic surgery team led by Professor Stefano Margaritora.

Pope Leo announced the discovery of the lung nodule on Sunday, October 11, explaining that it was detected during recent routine medical examinations. He described the growth as being at a very early stage and well-localised, adding that he had decided to undergo surgery on the advice of his doctors.

The Vatican said the Pope is expected to remain in hospital for approximately one week to recover from the procedure. All his scheduled audiences have been cancelled until October 20.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the pontiff greeted medical staff, patients and well-wishers who had gathered to welcome him. He was also seen acknowledging the crowd before entering the facility.

Messages of support and prayers have continued to pour in from Catholic communities and religious leaders around the world as the Pope prepares for the operation.

The Vatican is expected to provide further information about the procedure and his condition later on Tuesday.
