The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, has responded to allegations that Nigerian singer Rema used its officers to intimidate an interior decorator, Amaka Obasi, in a contractual dispute.
The claims surfaced on Tuesday, September 16, when a software artist identified as @software_artist on X alleged that Rema had contracted Amaka to renovate his new house but resorted to using police intimidation after refusing to settle her outstanding balance.
However, in a statement on Wednesday, FCID spokesperson ASP Maiyegun Aminat dismissed the claims, accusing Amaka of breaching the terms of her agreement with the singer.
According to the police, Rema filed a formal petition stating that on April 4, 2023, he entered into a contract with Amaka, who operates under Ardeb Lifestyle Company, for a project valued at ₦386 million. The singer reportedly made a part payment of ₦287 million, with the balance due upon completion of the job.
ASP Aminat explained that an inspection later revealed the project was incomplete and furniture supposedly delivered was not found in the building. Investigations also showed that after receiving funds, Amaka transferred part of the money into another account, while the account used by her company was not properly registered or linked.
“Both parties were accordingly advised to engage an independent valuer to ascertain the position of funds and project execution. Instead, Miss Obasi declined to provide either a valuer’s report or a legal representative, until she was eventually apprehended today,” the statement read in part.
The FCID further urged the public to disregard misleading narratives, stressing that the police do not serve personal vendettas but act strictly within the law.
