Plateau Transport Ministry Targets Better Service Delivery through Staff Training

The Commissioner for Transport in Plateau State, Hon. Jatau Davou Gyang, has said the in-house training programme organized for staff of the Ministry of Transport demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to professionalism and improved service delivery across the state.

Hon. Gyang made this known while declaring open the training programme held at the Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat in Jos. He explained that continuous capacity building is essential to strengthening the transport sector, which plays a critical role in economic growth and social development.

According to the commissioner, a well-trained and skilled workforce will enhance the ministry’s ability to discharge its responsibilities effectively. He urged staff to take personal responsibility for their growth by using work hours productively and embracing continuous learning, stressing that computer literacy and digital skills are now indispensable in modern public service.

Hon. Gyang described the training as an investment in the future of the ministry and encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained to improve teamwork, accountability, and the quality of transport services provided to the people of Plateau State.

The training covered key thematic areas including public service and civil service rules, work ethics and etiquette, financial regulations, procurement law, mental health, and public relations. These focus areas align with the state government’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and effective public service delivery under the “The Time Is Now” agenda.

Resource persons at the programme included Mr. Benjamin Sukumkya, who delivered a session on Public Service and Civil Service Rules; Mrs. Simi Chollom on Work Ethics and Etiquette; Mr. Hezekiah Vwamse on Financial Regulations; Mr. Suleiman Lapson on an Overview of Procurement Law; Mrs. Ujin Joseph Mallai on Public Relations and Publicity; and Dr. Yusuf Maigari, who handled the session on Mental Health.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Jummai Shekarau, said the training was timely and crucial for improving staff performance and professionalism. She noted that it would equip workers with the skills required to carry out their duties more effectively and urged participants to put into practice the knowledge acquired.

She added that continuous training remains a key driver for achieving the ministry’s objectives and enhancing service delivery.

Participants expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Transport for organizing the programme, describing it as impactful and relevant. Mangut Emmanuel Weng said the training helped staff better understand their roles and responsibilities, particularly in areas of accountability and transparency, which would guide their performance in the year.

Mrs. Ayisa Fwangkwal also commended the initiative, noting that it provided clarity on work ethics and office conduct, thereby enabling staff to perform their duties more efficiently while understanding their rights and obligations.

The Ministry stated that by investing in staff capacity, it aims to ensure that Plateau State’s transport system operates efficiently, safely, and in line with the expectations of residents and stakeholders, while fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation among its workforce.
